Course Conditions Update 8/27/25

An Update From Our Agronomy Team

We hope this message finds you well. We’d like to provide a brief update on current conditions and ongoing recovery efforts at The Preserve at Eisenhower Golf Course.

This past winter caused significant damage to two of our fairways, a condition known as winter kill. Multiple factors—including weather, shade, and drainage—contributed to the issue. Recovery was further delayed by an unusually late seasonal warmup, which shortened the recovery window before the peak of golf season. As a result, the turf had little opportunity to rebuild root health before facing summer stress.

When warmer weather did arrive, it brought excessive rain, heat, and humidity—conditions that create a “perfect storm” for turf stress. These factors were especially damaging to our poa annua (annual bluegrass), which does not tolerate excess water or high heat. While most of our fairways are Bermudagrass, areas containing poa were heavily impacted, as were several bentgrass/poa greens.

Following this damage, we were left with thin or bare turf, which allowed weeds such as goosegrass, kyllinga, and nutsedge to take hold despite our preventative measures. We have adjusted rates accordingly to reflect this.

Our Recovery Plan
To restore playing conditions, we are taking the following steps:

  • Fairways: Limiting traffic in affected areas, encouraging Bermudagrass recovery with fertilizers and aerification, and resodding the most damaged sections through contractors and in-house transfers.
  • Greens: Taking advantage of the current cool spell to aerify, topdress, amend soils, and overseed thin poa areas with more resilient turf. This work requires several delayed openings in the coming weeks to allow proper recovery.
  • Weed Management: Continuing proactive control efforts, which should show improved results over the next several weeks.

It is critical to maximize recovery now to ensure the course is prepared for both the upcoming winter and future seasonal stresses.

To thank you for your patience and continued support while we restore full playing conditions, we are offering special reduced rates for the time being.

We greatly appreciate your understanding as we work to bring the course back to its best condition.

Sincerely,
The Preserve at Eisenhower Agronomy Team
